REVIEW TOUR: Luna by Rae Else
“Jess kept tracing the lines of her dreamcatcher. When she’d first gotten it, it had seemed to symbolize that she could make her own world. She didn’t need anyone to make one for her. Even as the movement highlighted her loss, though, the motion soothed her, making her feel as if she were sketching.”

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Jess has survived an upbringing in care. Diagnosed with rage blackouts, people look at her with pity and fear. The solution? Brutal workouts, Art – oh – and staying the hell away from others. Easily done in backwater Maine.

Yet one night she wakes to find herself by a lake, her clothes covered in blood, with no memory of what happened. Soon the water is aflame and a portal opens. Transported to the Triodia Penitentiary, she discovers she’s a shifter, a type of “para”. She’s also accused of murder and locked up.

Desperate to find a way out, she turns to her fellow inmates for help. Yet as they mount an escape, the enemies circling her increase. Will Jess survive unlocking the dangerous Heights and Depths of the para world and those within herself?

A sneak peak into Luna...

“The air began to glow between the boughs ... Jess’s thoughts stilled completely as silhouettes of yews appeared in the shafts of light, cast from the original two trees. The hazy forms rippled like desert mirages. Soon there were a handful of spectacularly huge trees in the room, and still the forest grew, more forms emerging from the glow from the Between.

When the radiant light finally faded, Jess let out a breath she’d been holding without realizing. She stared up at the network of boughs, the green scent filling her lungs as fresh as foliage after rainfall. Even without the golden light, the luscious woodland seemed to glisten around her like emeralds. Some patches of bark were smooth, others were spiny. Moss and lichen climbed over the roots that had supplanted themselves in the soil as if they’d long lived in the ground here. She drank in the details of the trees’ spiny needles, dark green above and grey-green below.”
